Ben Folds Improves Song Based On Audience Shout
by chris on Apr.15, 2007, under Links
This is great! I wish I had this kind of talent. At a show in Berlin, Germany an audience member shouts something out during the concert and Folds makes up an entire song on the spot unsing this guy’s unintelligible call. Here are the lyrics as best I could make out. If you can translate the last two German lines, post a comment and I’ll add ‘em.
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh! It’s the call of the wild,
In Berlin.
Motherfuckers,
Keep shouting,Unintelligible shit,
It doesn’t matter what language you speak,
It’s the same all over the world,
Motherfuckers always say,Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!Maybe it’s the Jägermeister talking,
Maybe it’s the cigarette smoke,
Maybe it’s the shear numbers of people,
With very high intelligence.Maybe it’s the distance to the bathroom,
And the feces all over the wall,
Maybe it’s the little red keyboard,
That cost a thousand bucks.Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh! They’re rockin this bitch in Berlin,
They’re rockin this bitch in Berlin,
They’re rockin this bitch in Berlin,
Germany. They’re rockin this bitch in Berlin,
They’re rockin this bitch in Berlin,
Everywhere around the world,
Motherfuckers sing the same fuckin thing, they sing,Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
It’s the international language.Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
Bah Bah Mmm Baaahh!
We’re rockin this bitch in Berlin.Mein Deutsch ist nicht so good, [My German is not so good]
Mein Deutsch ist scheiße Deutsch, [My German is shitty German]
Was ist heute die Tages Suppe? [What is the soup of the day?][garbled and in German]

This is so good, I almost feel sorry for the telemarketer. And it’s almost enough to get me to take my number off the Do-Not-Call List!

Nicotine Reduces Blood Alcohol Levels
by chris on Oct.04, 2006, under Links
According to Nature News, it is believed that nicotine reduces the “potency of alcohol in the body.” From the article:
To mimic more closely the effect in human drinkers, Chen and his colleagues studied the effects of binge drinking in adult rats. They injected rats’ stomachs with a dose of alcohol roughly equivalent to around four or five drinks in quick succession; enough to make their blood alcohol hit double the United States legal driving limit of 0.08%. The team also gave the animals a range of nicotine doses similar to those in the bodies of light, moderate or heavy smokers.
In ‘heavy smoking’ animals, the nicotine slashed the rats’ peak blood-alcohol level, which came about an hour after injection, in half. Blood alcohol of ‘moderate smoking’ animals dropped by around 30%, and animals mimicking light smokers were not affected. The results are reported in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.
Apparently nicotine slows the emptying of the stomach, which reduces the amount of alcohol absorbed by the body. Maybe this explains why I’m such a light-weight when it comes to booze.

Walk a Quarter-Mile or Die
by chris on May.02, 2006, under Links
If you can walk a quarter-mile, odds are you have at least six years of life left in you, scientists announced today. And the faster you can do it, the longer you might live.
I just found this on Digg.com. I hope my family sees this and walks more. ;^) I guess I should feel happy about how much walking I do at work. Heck, I think it’s probably a quarter mile just from my car to where I clock in every morning (Update: According to Google Maps, it’s about 1600 feet or 0.3 miles).
